What is Damascene?

Damascene refers to something, or someone, from Damascus, Syria. Damascus is one of the oldest cities in the Middle East and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Damascus steel was a specific type of steel used in sword-making. Damascene is also a type of pigeon.

Damascene jewellery is created by a technique called damascening, which involves inlaying gold, silver or other metals onto a background of darkly oxidised steel.
