What is Damascene?
Damascene refers to something, or someone, from Damascus, Syria. Damascus is one of the oldest cities in the Middle East and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Damascus steel was a specific type of steel used in sword-making. Damascene is also a type of pigeon.
Damascene jewellery is created by a technique called damascening, which involves inlaying gold, silver or other metals onto a background of darkly oxidised steel. Unless specifically stated on the item, it can be difficult to ascertain which metal has been used and it should not be assumed to be gold or silver unless marked as so. The craftsmanship and detailing in damascene items is hard to replicate and so many damascene pieces are highly sought after by antique dealers and buyers alike.
